Connecting to communities

Museums have to build sustainable relationships with their communities. In order to do this, they first need to get to know their communities. They need to define a common ground, what they can do together and what they cannot. Ideally museum staff should to go and meet these communities and be active listeners in order to build confidence in their communities and have trust in their mission.

  • Who are the communities? Where are they? Who are the members? What are their needs? What are their skills and assets?
  • How do museums engage with these communities?
  • What is the common ground?
  • How are museum staff and management involved in the decision-making process for projects? What types of internal changes are necessary to achieve the goal of connecting with communities?

Strategy for success

Over the years, innovation has become a topic of significant interest for museums. Museums see innovation as a strategic tool to achieve their mission in the. 21st century context where all economic actors are strongly impacted by the evolution of digital technology and where museums are increasingly conscious of their social mission.
To implement such an initiative in organisations, an innovation plan needs to have clear goals, a strategy and a business model. Hence to succeed in building creative projects, museums need to design strategic plans.

  • What are the museum’s skills and assets? What expertise does the museum need to acquire?
  • What type of partnership can be built?
  • Which kind of business model is envisaged?
  • How can leaders acknowledge these experimentations?
